strange animal that astonished a community
The Patagonian cavy (pronounced cave-y) — a large rodent that looks sort of like a rabbit, sort of like a donkey — showed up Tuesday on a busy Milwaukie road. Nicco Phillips, 17, stopped on his way to school, corralled it and took it home.
“I just really like him. So does my girlfriend, Lexi, and he seems to like us, too,” Phillips said Wednesday.
Around Oregon, veterinarians, cavy-lovers and others called the family to offer guesses and advice about the creature.
Phillips and his family soon learned that the cavy is a daytime creature from Argentina that eats grass and other plants, often lives in dens in the ground and stays in groups of 10 to 15. It can run swiftly and take six-foot leaps. And it can be affectionate and cuddly.
Phillips was hoping he could keep the cavy. He and his girlfriend were even coming up with names.
But tonight, Phillips’ mother, Dawn Walker, sent a message punctuated with a big frowny-face.
“It looks like the owner has come forward and will be picking up the cavy in about an hour,” she wrote. “His name is Braden Voigt, and the cavy’s name is Spock.”
Voigt could not be reached for comment.
